SUMMARY:Wales Tour/Wizz : September 2024
DESCRIPTION:This is a tour/wizz that has become such a group favourite that we currently do it twice a year! Broadly speaking\, for 2024 we will repeat the previous successful format\, travelling to Wales on a Monday and returning on a Thursday\, with two full days exploring some of the very best roads in the UK. We deliberately choose to avoid school holidays and weekends\, so we don’t have to share with too many caravans or other traffic.  Overall we’re talking of around 1200 miles planned and organised into manageable stages. \nFor 2024 we are proposing for September 16-19th and July 8-11th. \nThis event is open to all our group members\, and we do encourage Tour/Wizz newbies.  But please be aware that the overall mileage\, duration\, road conditions and weather combine to make this a challenging trip… ie: tiring but fun.. and very rewarding!  Please read the notes below and check with your instructor if you are in doubt as to the suitability of the trip. \nIMPORTANT: We will be based in Mid West Wales\, with the venue and price currently a work in progress.  Further updates once we have finalised details. \nI will once again be aided and abetted by my two Welsh Politburo co-conspirators Roger Manning and Hugh Curran. \nThe price has yet to be confirmed but we are working to keep it similar to past years circa £160 sharing\, to £200 single (dependant on room type) for three night’s bed\, breakfast and evening meal.  Please note that single rooms will likely be in short supply.  We shall be limiting Tour/Wizz numbers to a manageable maximum of 30 riders\, and if previous trips are anything to go by\, demand will greatly outstrip supply\, and spaces may have to be allocated as fairly as we can.  Pillions are very welcome. \nImportant:\nWhilst our Tours/Wizzes are open to all; we do have some safety criteria that you must meet.  So before you come forward and to avoid disappointment please read our Prepare for a Tour/Wizz and ensure you are comfortable with the advice and that you meet the criteria.\nIf in any doubt then discuss with your Instructor\, Roger or myself. \nIf you would like to reserve a place (to be confirmed once final details are known)\, or have questions\, please email me on timbenians@gmail.com.\nIn the first instance\, please let me know the dates you want to book for\, and your sharing/single room preference. \nThanks\, Tim \n

DESCRIPTION:On offer for your pleasure this month\, courtesy of one of our instructors – Paul Matchett; he is set to take us on a jolly across West Sussex and onto the delights of South and North Hampshire. \n\n\n\nRIDE DETAILS \nSunday September 29th.   Arrive in good time for a pre-ride brief around at 08:45 with a departure at 09:00.  Note we are finishing (at a different location) at approx 15:30\n\nMeeting Point Location:  Pease Pottage Services\, M23 J11\, Brighton Rd\, Crawley RH11 9YA. \nClosest Petrol Station:  At the start point. \nPre-Ride coffee/tea:  At the start point. \nLunch Stop:  The Flight Deck Cafe\, Lasham Airfield\,  Alton\, Hampshire\, GU34 5SS \nOutward Route:\nWe start our journey through the biking A & B roads of West Sussex\, heading towards Chichester and then on towards Havant\, where we’ll stop at Shell Services\, (Durrants Rd\, Rowlands Castle\, Havant PO9 6BB) for a quick coffee/comfort/fuel break. We then head northwest on a mixture of roads in the direction of Winchester\, turning north and running up through the Candovers and onto Lasham Airfield. Total distance 88 miles. \nReturn Route:\nAfter lunch we head a more direct route back eventually finishing at Billingshurst Services\, Unit 2\, Business Park\, New Rd\, Billingshurst RH14 9LY.  Total distance 49 miles \n  \n\n** New and Recent members – remember please you will need to have had your Initial Assessment Ride with an Instructor to attend this and any other club riding activities \n** All members please carry your membership card on this and all club activities \n\nREGISTRATION \nThere are no restrictions on how many can join the ride\, but we ask that you please register by emailing the ride leader.  See details below. \n\nWeather\nAs with all Group Ride Outs\, please note that if the overnight temperature is forecast to be below 3C degrees at the ride start point\, the ride out will be cancelled automatically.   There will not normally be a second notification if this is the case. \nBack-Marker System\nOne of the riders will need to Back-Mark so any volunteer for this please advise the ride leader when you register for the ride.  If you have an orange Hi-Viz please bring it with you\, or one may be provided on the day\, or dependant on the size of the group an alternative marker may be agreed. \nPlease make sure you are fully conversant with the rules of the “BACK-MARKER SYSTEM“.  Following these correctly is vital to the smooth running of the day and reduces the risk of losing someone or everyone. DESCRIPTION:On offer for your pleasure courtesy of our very own Group Chief Instructor\, Steve Tovee\, a scenic ride up towards Oxford. \n\n\n\nRIDE DETAILS\nSunday October 27th from 08:30\, for a pre-ride brief at 9:00 and Wheels-up at 09:15 \nMeeting Point Location:  Costa Coffee\, Stane St\, Billingshurst\, RH14 9LY \nClosest Petrol Station:  At start point \nPre-ride coffee/tea:   Costa Coffee\, Stane St\, Billingshurst\, RH14 9LY \nLunch stop: H Cafe – Deacon’s Garage\, Oxford Rd\, Dorchester\, Wallingford OX10 7LY \nRide Description \nWe will be riding from Billingshurst to the H Cafe in Dorchester. Taking in the scenic route. It’s approx 2 hours each way and 70-80miles. You’ll learn the details of the renowned Police System to ensure that you always have the breathing space to tackle the hazards every biker faces. The System was developed to reduce Police rider accidents in pursuit riding situations; before the System\, the accident rate of police drivers and riders was one every 7\,000 miles. Since the introduction of “the System” that dropped to one every 70\,000 miles. \nBends and Positioning – applying the system of motorcycle control. \nHow safely are you keeping away from likely hazards? How far ahead can you spot what’s going on? Positioning directly affects both. In week 1\, you’ll learn how to use your positioning to be more stable when cornering\, ride safer and see further ahead. You will also learn about ‘observation links’ and other tricks of the trade. Ever had a close shave or felt rushed? Do you miss safe overtaking opportunities?\nIn this week 2\, you’ll learn the overtaking techniques used by expert road riders to boost safety and skill. You will also learn our top tips for safe and sound filtering. SUMMARY:March EOM Ride Out
DESCRIPTION:Currently a work in progress\, details to follow. \n\n\n\nRIDE DETAILS \nSunday March 30th with a pre-ride briefing at 09:15\, and wheels up at 09:30.  Arrive earlier if you want a coffee/tea ahead of time. \nMeeting Point Location:  McDonalds\, 165 London Rd\, East Grinstead RH19 1ET.\nAt the start there is plenty of parking at the rear of site – please park as a group to minimise disruption to other users. \nClosest Petrol Station:  Esso within 500m in East Grinstead one way system or Jet 100m adjacent. \nPre-ride coffee/tea:  McDonalds \nLunch stop: Wings Cafe at Headcorn Aerodrome \nRide Description \nA spooktacular route passing through Pluckley\, England’s most haunted village using some great roads across West Sussex\, Kent and East Sussex\, for a total of approx 130 miles. \nOutward Route:\nHeading towards Bayham Abbey\, Goudhurst\, across to Charing and then circling back towards Headcorn for a lunch stop \nReturn Route:\nFrom Headcorn towards Bodium Castle\, Battle and ending at Cross in Hand. \nRide end will be at the Shell Petrol Station at Cross in Hand\, near Heathfield\, allowing time for participants to head home whilst still light. \n  \n\n** New and Recent members – remember please you will need to have had your Initial Assessment Ride with an Instructor to attend this and any other club riding activities \n** All members please carry your membership card on this and all club activities \n\nREGISTRATION \nThere are no restrictions on how many can join the ride\, but we ask that you please register by emailing the ride leader.  See details below. \n\nWeather\nAs with all Group Ride Outs\, please note that if the overnight temperature is forecast to be 3C degrees or below at the ride start meeting place\, the ride out will be cancelled automatically.   There will not normally be a second notification if this is the case.  We only use the BBC Weather for our information.\n  \nBack-Marker System\nOne of the riders will need to Back-Mark so any volunteer for this please advise the ride leader when you register for the ride.  If you have an orange Hi-Viz please bring it with you\, or one may be provided on the day\, or dependant on the size of the group an alternative marker may be agreed. \nPlease make sure you are fully conversant with the rules of the “BACK-MARKER SYSTEM“.  Following these correctly is vital to the smooth running of the day and reduces the risk of losing someone or everyone. Details of the BM system are on our Southernriders.org  website.   If you’re unsure on the day\, ask one of the attending Ride Leader. They will be more than happy to clarify any issues you have. \nHi-Viz\nIf you wear hi-viz\, please ensure it is not Orange as this is reserved for the ‘back-marker’ during our ride-outs.  We appreciate you may normally wear an orange hi-viz whilst riding. However\, some find it confusing when in the middle of the group to see two or more riders with the orange hi-viz.  So\, in an effort to avoid confusion and markers leaving their post prematurely ONLY the back-marker is to wear orange hi-viz.   Thank you
