SUMMARY:August EOM Ride Out
DESCRIPTION:A joyous Summers days ride with Adam Shand with a rare treat to explore the Garden of England! \n\n\n\nRIDE DETAILS \nSunday August 31st – meeting at 09:00 for a 09:20 briefing and 09:30 start.  Return anticipated around 15:30-16:00 \nMeeting Point Location:  Cafe Anatolia\, 2 Brookfield Road\, Ashford\, TN23 4ES \nClosest Petrol Station:  Shell\, next to Cafe \nPre-ride coffee/tea:  At start location (open from 09:00) \nLunch stop: The Airport Cafe \nRide Description \nA ride through The Kent countryside from Ashford\, flirting with the East Sussex border as we arrive at the coast for our first stop. We then take some more challenging and twisty roads through the Romney Marshes\, passing through farmland linked by old\, beautiful Hamlets\, heading towards one of my favourite lunch stops at The Airport Cafe. We then take some varied roads\, exploring parts of the Kent downs before arriving at the coast once again at our main stop\, The Battle Of Britain Memorial. This is a truly humbling location that offers a spectacular view of the English channel and an alternative perspective. They also have expert guides on site to talk to\, a nice cafe and gift shop. This is where the route can end\, allowing people to spend as long or little time here as they like\, it’s also odirectly linked to the M20 or A2 for easy access to motorways. For those wanting a bit more\, I have a shorter route back towards Ashford that takes in some more of the Kent downs as well of a few more of my favoourite roads\, offerng an exciting ride for anyone looking to make the most of the days ride.\nTotal distance – 130 miles; with a number of shorter and longer stops planned (see above) \nEnd of Ride:  Tescos\, Kingsnorth\, Ashford (TN23 3LU) \n\n** New and Recent members – remember please you will need to have had your Initial Assessment Ride with an Instructor to attend this and any other club riding activities \n** All members please carry your membership card on this and all club activities \n\nREGISTRATION \nThere are no restrictions on how many can join the ride\, but we ask that you please register by emailing the ride leader.  See details below. \n\nBack-Marker System\nOne of the riders will need to Back-Mark so any volunteer for this please advise the ride leader when you register for the ride.  If you have an orange Hi-Viz please bring it with you\, or one may be provided on the day\, or dependant on the size of the group an alternative marker may be agreed. \nPlease make sure you are fully conversant with the rules of the “BACK-MARKER SYSTEM“.  Following these correctly is vital to the smooth running of the day and reduces the risk of losing someone or everyone. Details of the BM system are on our Southernriders.org  website.   If you’re unsure on the day\, ask one of the attending Ride Leader. They will be more than happy to clarify any issues you have. \nHi-Viz\nIf you wear hi-viz\, please ensure it is not Orange as this is reserved for the ‘back-marker’ during our ride-outs.  We appreciate you may normally wear an orange hi-viz whilst riding. SUMMARY:Wales Tour/Wizz - September 2025
DESCRIPTION:This is a tour/wizz that has become such a group favourite that we currently do it twice a year! Broadly speaking\, for 2025 we will repeat the previous successful format\, travelling to Wales on a Monday and returning on a Thursday\, with two full days exploring some of the very best roads in the UK. We deliberately choose to avoid school holidays and weekends\, so we don’t have to share with too many caravans or other traffic.  Overall we’re talking of around 1200 miles planned and organised into manageable stages. \nFor 2025 we are proposing for July 7th – 10th and September 8th – 11th. \nThis event is open to all our group members\, and we do encourage Tour/Wizz newbies.  But please be aware that the overall mileage\, duration\, road conditions and weather combine to make this a challenging trip… ie: tiring but fun.. and very rewarding!  Please read the notes below and check with your instructor if you are in doubt as to the suitability of the trip. \nI will once again be aided and abetted by my two Welsh Politburo co-conspirators Roger Manning and Hugh Curran. \nNOTE: We will be based in Mid West Wales\, with the venue and price currently a work in progress.  Further updates once we have finalised details. \nThe price has yet to be confirmed but we are working on £195 sharing and £275 single rooms for the three nights half board (ie: bed\, breakfast and evening meal).  Please note that single rooms will likely be in short supply.  We shall be limiting Tour/Wizz numbers to a manageable maximum of 30 riders\, and if previous trips are anything to go by\, demand will greatly outstrip supply\, and spaces may have to be allocated as fairly as we can.  Pillions are very welcome. \n*IMPORTANT* \nWhilst our Tours / Wizzes are open to all; we do have some safety criteria that you must meet.  So before you come forward and to avoid disappointment please read our Preparing for a Tour and ensure you are comfortable with the advice and that you do or will meet the criteria.\nIf in any doubt then discuss with your Instructor\, Roger or myself. \nIf you would like to reserve a place (to be confirmed once final details are known)\, or have questions\, please email me on timbenians@gmail.com.\nIn the first instance\, please let me know the dates you want to book for\, and your sharing/single room preference. \nThanks\, Tim \n

SUMMARY:The Wee Scottish Tour/Wizz 2025
DESCRIPTION:Our Scottish Wizz for 2025 will as usual avoid the school holiday dates to miss the crowds and enjoy the amazing quiet roads and beauty of the Highlands. \nThis is open to all the membership and will be a minimum of a seven (7) day trip;  five (5) in the Highlands with a day either side to travel up and back home. Most however take two days up and two days back home. \nPlease note that\, for the trips up and back the rider remains responsible for sourcing their own accommodation. \nOverall\, you can expect to be covering around 2500-2700 miles including travel from the Sussex/Surrey area\, planned and organised into manageable stages in true SMART tradition. \nWhilst we do ride on parts of the NC500 route\, we also discover the quieter and most spectacular roads around the Highlands as well as taking a trip to the Isle of Skye. \nThis trip is all about the riding and the amazing roads and scenery. The roads are grippy and retain most of that grip even should the worst happen and we suffer some rain ! \nStops will include the infamous John O’Groats\, various stunning stops along the north and west coasts and at least one stop on the Isle of Skye. \nAccommodation will be in Beauly\, near Inverness at The Priory Hotel\, on a dinner\, bed and breakfast basis\, so the only extras will be coffee and cake stops\, and also lunch stops once you have arrived. Oh and of course a beer in the evening! \nThe prices are as follows:\n£135 per person per night for single occupancy in a Double or Twin Room\n£105 per person per night sharing a Double or Twin Room \n  \nDates are expected to be September 24th – September 28th\, 2025 with 12 rooms already pre-booked. So if you want to bring a partner as pillion\, or of course on their own wheels\, get in there whilst the double rooms are available. DESCRIPTION:On offer for your pleasure courtesy of one of our newer instructors – Paul Matchett is a lovely ride through Sussex and Hampshire. \n\n\n\nRIDE DETAILS \nSunday September 28th – Meet at 08:00 (or before for coffee);  Pre-ride briefing at 08:15;  Wheels up at 08:30.  Return anticipated (different location) around 15:30 \nMeeting Point Location:  Pease Pottage Services\, M23 Junction\, 11 Brighton Rd\, Crawley RH11 9YA \nClosest Petrol Station:  At the start point \nPre-ride coffee/tea:  At the start point \nLunch stop: Army Flying Museum \nRide Description \nConsisting of a mix of A\, B and minor roads for a total of 160 miles.\nOutward Route:\nWe start our journey through the A & B roads of Sussex\, heading towards Chichester and then on towards Havant\, where we’ll stop at Shell Services\, (Durrants Rd\, Rowlands Castle\, Havant PO9 6BB) for a quick coffee/comfort/fuel break. We then head west on a mixture of roads before looping round to the south of Winchester and up to the Army Flying Museum. Total distance 100 miles\nReturn Route: After lunch we head a more direct route back eventually finishing at Billingshurst Services\, Unit 2\, Business Park\, New Rd\, Billingshurst RH14 9LY. This EOM is perfect for those wishing to practice using the limit point to smooth out their ride using acceleration sense and those who are looking for some Roman roads to practice overtaking. You will be wise to only travel at a speed where you can stop safely on your side of the road in the distance you can see to be clear since during the recce Jason came across logging lorries\, horses\, tractor\, cyclists and walkers ! \nOutward Route: We will start off in Dorking at the 24hr garage and head south through the picturesque Leith Hill National Trust area and continue on open and flowing roads to Billingshurst where there will be a chance to reflect on your ride over a cup of tea at the Toat Cafe\, Stane St\, Pulborough RH20 1DN.\nAfter that we will continue south\, passing Storrington\, and on towards Bury Hill. We won’t stop there though but will continue west towards Eartham where we will strike north on Roman Roads. Arriving in Petworth we will have a quick tour of the one way system to get to the car park and find a cafe for a drink; Cherry’s Deli and Bakery has been recommended. \nDistance of ride and any stops: Total ride length – 84 miles \nReturn Route: Fully refreshed\, completely dry and bored of amazing roads with no traffic we will head north across the undulating Surrey roads through Morris dancer land and end up at Newlands Corner\, a popular biker meeting place. DESCRIPTION:Ride School is open to all members at zero cost.  This event is held over two Sundays in the Spring and is intended to reinforce ‘The System’ and Motorcycle Roadcraft whilst hopefully being insightful and informative in an informal jovial couple of days. \nEver had to react to a situation suddenly? You’ll learn the details of the renowned Police System to ensure that you always have the breathing space to tackle the hazards every biker faces. The System was developed to reduce Police rider accidents in pursuit riding situations; before the System\, the accident rate of police drivers and riders was one every 7\,000 miles. Since the introduction of “the System” that dropped to one every 70\,000++ miles. \nThis is the first session of two.  Details for Part 2 can be viewed here  \nWelcome from 9am for a prompt start at 9:30am \nAgenda \n\nThe System\nRide Planning\n2025 Changes to Roadcraft\nBends and Positioning\n\n \nBends and Positioning – applying the system of motorcycle control.\nHow safely are you keeping away from likely hazards? How far ahead can you spot what’s going on? Positioning directly affects both. In week 1\, you’ll learn how to use your positioning to be more stable when cornering\, ride safer and see further ahead. You will also learn about ‘observation links’\, planning and other tricks of the trade. DESCRIPTION:  \nOn offer for your pleasure this month\, courtesy of one of our instructors\, and our Group Secretary\, Darren Stewart\, is a lovely ride through < Kent and Sussex > to the Custom Cafe for lunch. \n\nRIDE DETAILS\nSunday Feb 22nd  –  Pre-ride briefing:  09:00;  Wheels up: 09:15.  Return to finish at Cross in Hand anticipated around  3:30-4:00 pm. \nMeeting Point Location:  McDonalds\, East Grinstead\, 165 London Road\, RH19 1ET  –  plenty of parking at the rear\, please park together to minimise impact to others. \nClosest Petrol Station:  Esso and Jet within 500m \nPre-ride coffee/tea: At start – please consume before pre-ride brief at 09:00 \nLunch stop: Custom Cafe\, Bexhill \nRide Description \nA great route flirting with the boundaries of East Sussex and Kent on mainly A & B roads\, with plenty of Nation Speed Limits for good measure.\nOutward Route: From East Grinstead out towards Goudhurst and Sutton Valence.  No planned stops apart from lunch and fuel.  150 miles in total. \nReturn Route: Heading back to our end point at Cross in Hand on some nice A & B roads.  Aiming to be back around 4pm. \n** New and Recent members – remember please you will need to have had your Initial Assessment Ride with an Instructor to attend this and any other club riding activities \n** All members please carry your membership card on this and all club activities \n\nREGISTRATION \nThere are no restrictions on how many can join the ride\, but we ask that you please register by emailing the ride leader.  See details below. \n\nWeather\nAs with all Group Ride Outs\, please note that if the overnight temperature is forecast to be 3C degrees or below at the ride start meeting place\, the ride out will be cancelled automatically.   There will not normally be a second notification if this is the case.  We only use the BBC Weather for our information.\n  \nBack-Marker System\nOne of the riders will need to Back-Mark so any volunteer for this please advise the ride leader when you register for the ride.  If you have an orange Hi-Viz please bring it with you\, or one may be provided on the day\, or dependant on the size of the group an alternative marker may be agreed. \nPlease make sure you are fully conversant with the rules of the “BACK-MARKER SYSTEM“.  Following these correctly is vital to the smooth running of the day and reduces the risk of losing someone or everyone. Details of the BM system are on our Southernriders.org  website.   If you’re unsure on the day\, ask one of the attending Ride Leader. They will be more than happy to clarify any issues you have. \nHi-Viz\nIf you wear hi-viz\, please ensure it is not Orange as this is reserved for the ‘back-marker’ during our ride-outs.  We appreciate you may normally wear an orange hi-viz whilst riding. However\, some find it confusing when in the middle of the group to see two or more riders with the orange hi-viz.  So\, in an effort to avoid confusion and markers leaving their post prematurely ONLY the back-marker is to wear orange hi-viz.   Thank you \n\n  \n

Ever had a close shave or felt rushed? Do you miss safe overtaking opportunities?\nIn this week 2 session\, you’ll learn the overtaking techniques used by expert road riders to boost safety and skill. You will also learn our top tips for safe and sound filtering. DESCRIPTION:On offer for your pleasure this month\, courtesy of one of our instructors\, Steve Roys\, is a lovely ride through Kent and Sussex to lunch near Hurst Green. \n\n\n\nRIDE DETAILS \nSunday March 29th  –  Pre-ride briefing:  09:15;  Wheels up: 09:30.  \nMeeting Point Location:  McDonald’s Maresfield\, Uckfeld By-Pass A26/A272\, TN22 5EP (50.988854\, 0.090508) \nClosest Petrol Station:  At start point \nPre-ride coffee/tea:  At start point \nLunch stop: Planters Garden Centre\, A21\, just north of Hurst Green (fuel within 100 mtrs) \nRide Description \nThe route winds its way through about 140 miles of The High Weald national landscape across the East Sussex and Kent countryside. It covers A roads\, B Roads\, some back lanes and even a bit of Dual Carriageway. Something for everyone….. We will have a very short coffee/comfort/regroup stop in the morning before continuing to Planters Garden centre on the A21 for lunch at about 13:00. After lunch we head back East\, in a very round and about way\, to our starting point at Maresfield.  For those who  enjoyed Octobers ride\, this route is a slightly extended version that covers similar roads\, but with different stops\, and in a mix and match order. Several sections are done in the reverse direction. For those who have further to travel\, you are always welcome to head back home after lunch.
